Alcohol & Substance Use

Real, Practical Substance Use Counseling

Am I drinking too much?"

If you’re asking that question, you don’t need a lecture. You need a straightforward partner to help you regain control.

When alcohol or marijuana starts interfering with your marriage, your kids, your job, or your peace of mind, it’s easy to feel stuck or ashamed. Counseling with me isn’t stuffy, prim, or proper. I'm an imperfect human being first, and I communicate in everyday language, no fronting required.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

Sometimes "loss of control" doesn't mean hitting rock bottom or drinking every single day. Often, it sounds like:

  • "Once I start drinking, I can't stop."

  • "My spouse told me if I don't get help, they're moving out."

  • "I got a DUI, and I might not be able to do my job."

  • "I no longer play video games because instead I’m drinking."

  • "I’m missing class or pulling through my workday hungover."

If this is where you are, understand these are common consequences of alcohol or substance use…not a life sentence.

You aren't permanently broken, and you don't have to stay stuck. People change and turn these situations around every single day.

Emily Reel

LPC, ALPS, MAC, SAP

I hold advanced clinical credentials, including LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor in WV & PA), MAC (Master Addiction Counselor), and SAP (Substance Abuse Professional), but credentials aren't what make therapy work.

I’m an imperfect human who has navigated major adult life changes, grief, and adjustments firsthand.

I’m not here to tell you how to live your "perfect" life; I’m here to help you figure out what a better life looks like for you, and help give you the tools to get there.

How We Work Together

You don't need to show up to your first appointment with everything figured out.

  • No Unrealistic Expectations: We start by examining how substance use is affecting your life and by testing practical adjustments to reduce harm and lower stress. You don't have to declare total lifetime abstinence on day one.

  • No Long Waitlists: I respond to inquiries within 48 business hours and work hard to get new clients scheduled within a few weeks so you get support when you actually need it.

How Evidence-Based Therapy Helps

I use practical methods that fit your situation to help you:

  • Find your internal motivation to change at your pace. (Motivational Interviewing - MI).

  • Learn to sit with uncomfortable feelings without reaching for alcohol or drugs to numb out. (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - ACT)

  • Identify hidden beliefs ("I'm just going to be a cranky old man forever") and change them to create lasting habits. (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - CBT / REBT)

  • Solve immediate, real-world problems such as navigating a new custody schedule, setting up a new home after divorce, or handling daily stress. (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy - SFBT)
